Digital marketing is becoming ever more important to the success of your business. Actually knowing what to do and where to begin can be rather confusing and overwhelming. Especially, if this is your first venture into digital marketing. Before you implement anything, you should put together a simple digital marketing action plan.

Why create a digital marketing action plan?

Many businesses approach digital marketing without giving much thought to what they are actually doing. Don’t be like them. They throw up a website or open a Facebook page and simply hope for the best because they don’t know any better.

Be clear on exactly what you want to achieve from you online marketing efforts. Then lay out a realistic plan for achieving your goals. Putting together a simple strategy will enable you to take focused action. Therefore, you’re more likely to succeed.

Basically, it’s not much different from how we would plan and execute deep sea diving operations when I was in the Navy.


Do your research. First, gather as much information about your clients as possible. Who is your target audience? What do they like to do? What motivates them? Most importantly, where do they hang out online?


Define an overall digital marketing objective. Decide exactly what it is you want to achieve from your efforts. For example, this may be your goal:

“Generate 50 new leads each month and convert at least 20% of those leads into paying clients.”


Decide on your digital marketing method. You have the information you’ve gathered. Moreover, you’ve defined a clear objective. Now it’s time to select the best digital marketing method to achieve your goals and objectives.

So, here are a few examples of marketing methods (or channels):

  • Your website
  • Social media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Email marketing
  • Content marketing

Specific goals and objectives must be established for the appropriate method selected. Additionally, key performance indicators (KPIs) should be determined. Many business owners will drop the ball right here. Especially with KPIs. It’s sad they fail here because it’s not too difficult.

KPIs are extremely important. You must know what goals you want to achieve. Next, when you see the results you’ve achieved, you can adjust your campaign accordingly.

Here are examples:

  • “Increase website traffic by 20% before the end of December 2017.”
  • “Add 500 new subscribers to our email newsletter every month and convert at least 20 of them into paying clients.”
  • “Generate 200 new leads from Facebook advertising in the next 30 days.”


Digital MarketingDesign your action plan. Finalize the exact steps you will take to meet your goals and establish your objectives. Establish timeframes for goals. Know precisely what should take place each day, each week and each month. Ensure your actions steps are realistic and manageable. Make sure you milestones and objectives are reasonable and attainable.

Don’t overwhelm yourself or your team. Because you want to be clear minded when you start your campaign.


Deploy your campaign. Go to work. Is everything in order? Good. Then kick off your campaign.


Determine adjustments from closely monitored results. Measure your results. Are you meeting or exceeding your daily, weekly and monthly goals? If yes, does your budget allow for increased investment to produce greater ROI? If no, can you reduce the budget there and allocate funds to more profitable solutions?
